An Abuja-based lawyer, Princess Nwamaka Mediatrix Chigbo, has been killed by suspected kidnappers in the Federal Capital Territory, sparking renewed concerns over insecurity in the nation’s capital.
Nwamaka was abducted on Monday, January 5, 2026. According to her family, she was on a phone call with her sister when she was taken. Shortly after, the call disconnected and her phone became unreachable.
The kidnappers later contacted the family, demanding a ransom of ₦3 million and issuing threats. Despite efforts by the family to establish communication and clarify payment arrangements, the abductors failed to provide details and subsequently cut off contact.
The family alerted the police and senior security officials, including the Federal Capital Territory Police Command. They were informed that security operatives had commenced tracking the kidnappers.
In the early hours of Tuesday, January 6, the family was notified that a woman in critical condition had been found and taken to a specialist hospital in Abuja. Upon arrival, family members confirmed that the victim was Nwamaka, who was later pronounced dead.
Police authorities have assured the family that investigations are ongoing and that those responsible will be brought to justice.
Princess Nwamaka Chigbo was an active member of the Nigerian Bar Association, Abuja, and belonged to several professional and faith-based organisations. She was widely described by colleagues as committed to her profession and community.
The family expressed appreciation to the police for their efforts so far and thanked friends, colleagues, and well-wishers for their support. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
