Manchester United have sacked manager Ruben Amorim just 14 months after his appointment, the club announced on Monday.

In a statement, United said the decision was taken “reluctantly” but described it as necessary to give the team the best chance of securing the highest possible finish in the Premier League this season. The club thanked the Portuguese coach for his service and wished him well in the future.

Darren Fletcher, United’s Under-18s coach, will take charge of the team on an interim basis, starting with Wednesday’s Premier League match against Burnley.

United are currently sixth in the league table following a 1–1 draw away to Leeds on Sunday. Amorim’s final days at Old Trafford were marked by visible tension, including a fiery post-match press conference in which he criticised the club’s recruitment structure and insisted he was the “manager” of Manchester United, not merely a coach.

Appointed in November 2024, Amorim led United to the Europa League final last May, where they lost to Tottenham Hotspur. However, domestic struggles persisted, with the club finishing 15th in the Premier League last season.

At 40, Amorim’s 14-month tenure is the shortest by a permanent Manchester United manager since David Moyes was dismissed eight months into his spell in 2014. United, who have won the English league title 20 times, have not lifted the Premier League trophy since Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season in 2013.
