The Federal High Court in Abuja has halted the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from holding its planned national convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, scheduled for November 15 and 16, 2025.
Delivering judgment, Justice James Omotosho upheld a suit filed by three aggrieved members of the party, ruling that the PDP failed to comply with the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and its own constitution.
The court found that the party did not conduct valid state congresses before proceeding to plan the national convention to elect new national officers.
Consequently, the judge ordered the PDP to “go back and put its house in order,” and to issue the statutory 21-day notice before rescheduling the convention.
The suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2120/2025, was filed by Hon. Austin Nwachukwu (Imo PDP Chairman), Hon. Amah Abraham Nnanna (Abia PDP Chairman), and Turnah Alabh George (PDP Secretary, South-South).
Listed as defendants were the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the PDP, its National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, National Organising Secretary Umar Bature, and two national officers, Ali Odefa and Emmanuel Ogidi, alongside the National Working Committee (NWC) and National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party.
Justice Omotosho also dismissed the preliminary objections filed by the defendants, who argued that the case involved the party’s internal affairs.
