Panic broke out on Monday as fire engulfed a six-storey building at Afriland Tower, Broad Street, Lagos Island.
The incident, which started in the inverter room located in the basement, sent thick smoke across several floors of the building, forcing workers and occupants to flee.
Several staff of the United Bank for Africa (UBA) and other occupants narrowly escaped the fire, which destroyed property worth millions of naira.
According to Ogabi Olajide, Deputy Controller General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the emergency call was received at 1:38 p.m. Fire crews from Ebute Elefun and Sari Iganmu stations responded swiftly to contain the blaze.
“Evacuation of occupants is in progress, while firefighting operations have doused the fire, calming the earlier panic,” Olajide said.
