A UK medical tribunal has ruled that Dr. Suhail Anjum, a consultant anaesthetist who left a patient under anaesthesia to engage in sexual activity with a nurse, can continue practicing medicine.

The incident occurred on September 16, 2023, at Tameside Hospital in Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester. Anjum told a nurse he was going to the bathroom but instead went to another operating theatre, where he was seen in a compromising situation with Nurse C. He was absent for eight minutes, but the patient suffered no harm.

An internal investigation led to Anjum’s dismissal in February 2024. He later relocated with his family to Pakistan, where he has continued practicing medicine.

At the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) hearing, Anjum described his actions as a “one-off error of judgment” and admitted he had let down his colleagues and patients.

Tribunal chair Rebecca Miller acknowledged that Anjum had put personal interests ahead of patient care and described his misconduct as serious. However, she concluded the risk of recurrence was “very low.” The tribunal imposed no sanction but will reconvene to consider issuing a formal warning.
