As the global community comes to terms with the passing of Pope Francis, a profound moment of unity and reflection unfolded today at St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. Dignitaries from across continents, religious leaders, and thousands of mourners gathered to pay their last respects to a man many have called the conscience of the world.

Among those in attendance was Peter Obi, former Nigerian presidential candidate and respected statesman, who joined Francis Cardinal Arinze and other world figures in honoring the life and legacy of the late Pontiff.

In a moving statement titled “Legacy of Light: What Pope Francis Taught the World,” Obi reflected on the Pope’s enduring impact. “Pope Francis was more than a Pontiff; he was a moral light in a world darkened by inequality and indifference,” Obi said. “He lived for others, spoke for the voiceless, and reminded us all that leadership must be about lifting others, not self-exaltation.”

Pope Francis passed away on April 21, 2025, leaving behind a transformative papacy marked by humility, progressive thinking, and unwavering dedication to the marginalized. His papal mission consistently challenged global leaders to prioritize justice, peace, and human dignity.

Obi, who recounted having met the Pope on three occasions, described each encounter as deeply personal and spiritually impactful. “He radiated peace and inspired faith,” Obi shared. “His presence was a quiet yet powerful reminder of the divine responsibility that leadership entails.”

In a poignant revelation, Obi also noted his involvement in Scholars Occultantes, an international circle of ethical thinkers founded by Pope Francis during his time as Archbishop. The organization, which focused on truth, ethical leadership, and social transformation, offered Obi deeper insight into the Pope’s intellectual and moral convictions.

As leaders around the world commemorate Pope Francis’ legacy, Obi issued a stirring call to action: “Let this moment not just be one of mourning, but a call to lead with conscience, walk with the people, and govern with love.”

Pope Francis’ influence transcended religious lines and political borders. In life and now in death, he remains a symbol of hope for a more compassionate and just world.
