Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar had expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Chief Ayo Adebanjo, the renowned Afenifere leader and elder statesman. Abubakar described Adebanjo as one of Nigeria’s last remaining nationalists, noting his significant contributions to the fight for justice, equity, and democracy in the country.
"I am saddened by the news of the passing away of Chief Ayo Adebanjo, a foremost elder statesman and one of the few remaining nationalists of our country," Atiku stated. "The late Afenifere leader was a formidable force and a fearless fighter for justice, equity, and an egalitarian society."
Atiku recalled Adebanjo's pivotal role in Nigeria’s political history, particularly his efforts in challenging military dictatorship and fighting for democratic governance. "I can vividly recall the heroic role that Pa Adebanjo played in wresting power from the military and enthroning democratic governance in Nigeria," Atiku said. "He was at the forefront of the fight against military dictatorship."
Adebanjo's lifelong commitment to activism was highlighted by Atiku, who emphasized that the late leader spent his youth fighting against colonial rule, his middle years challenging military rule, and his later years ensuring that good governance and democracy took root in Nigeria.
"Pa Adebanjo was a golden example of how to live and die for the good of the country," Atiku added, acknowledging the profound influence Adebanjo had as a mentor to generations of civil rights activists. "He was an activist extraordinaire and bridge builder who led the battle against injustice and oppression from the trenches."
The former Vice President further remarked that Adebanjo’s life serves as a "priceless map" for contemporary activists advocating for good governance. "He taught all of us how to be statesmen of distinction," Atiku said, reflecting on the lasting impact Adebanjo’s activism has had on Nigeria.
Atiku extended his condolences to the Adebanjo family, urging them to take solace in the fact that their patriarch was a "father to the whole country and a pride to the Black race." He also expressed sympathy to the people and government of Ogun State, where Adebanjo had long been a prominent figure.
"My profound condolences go to the Adebanjo family. I admonish them to take solace in the fact that the patriarch who they mourn was a father to the whole country and a pride to the Black race," Atiku said. "I pray for the peaceful repose of the gentle soul of the pioneer nationalist."
The death of Chief Ayo Adebanjo marks the loss of a towering figure in Nigeria’s political landscape, one whose commitment to democracy, justice, and unity will continue to inspire future generations.
