Cameroon-based Afropop artist, King Luca, hails from Bamenda, an English-speaking region in the heart of Cameroon. He focuses on creating music that reflects the complexities of love, tradition, and identity. His latest single, “Ashuabi,” is a nod to this vision.
“Ashuabi” also known as ‘Asoebi’ celebrates both romance and African traditions. It revolves around the concept of lifelong commitment, symbolized by Asoebi, a traditional practice of wearing matching outfits during special occasions like weddings. With lyrics like, “For a million years babe I no go leave” and “Even if na gunpoint I no centre u till I die,” King Luca conveys the strength and endurance of true love.
The song’s use of English, Pidgin, and French adds depth to the narrative, elevating its romantic tone. Phrases like “Mon amour te yah jousqu’a demain” (“My love will be with you until tomorrow”) and “Façon je t’aime là, je manque les mots pour décrire” (“The way I love you, I lack the words to describe it”) add intimacy and emotional richness to the track.
