The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has denounced the recent increase in fuel prices to over N1,000 per litre nationwide, calling it a severe affront to Nigerians’ sensibilities. The party argued that the hike, particularly at this time, will exacerbate the already dire economic conditions under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s APC administration.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday, PDP National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba criticized the administration’s opaque and corrupt management of the petroleum sector. He accused the government of pushing Nigerians to their limits and ignoring their suffering, with rising fuel prices compounding the already severe economic hardships.
Ologunagba stated that the APC government has demonstrated a disregard for the plight of millions of Nigerians who are struggling to afford basic necessities due to the high cost of living caused by the administration’s reckless policies. He pointed out that over 150 million Nigerians have fallen below the poverty line, businesses are failing, and the Naira has devalued to over N1,600 to the Dollar, with inflation and unemployment rates soaring as a result of the latest fuel price increase.
The PDP condemned the APC government’s failure to address these issues and criticized the government’s decision to leave Nigerians at the mercy of oil racketeers under the guise of a free market economy. They accused the Tinubu administration of neglecting its fundamental duty to ensure the welfare and security of its citizens.
The party also claimed that the APC has become a conduit for corrupt rent-seekers who profit from rising fuel prices while causing immense suffering for the public. The PDP expressed concern about what President Tinubu might be conveying to foreign counterparts about Nigeria’s situation.
The PDP asserted that with effective and transparent management of resources, the price of petrol in Nigeria should not exceed N250 per litre. They urged President Tinubu to reverse the recent fuel price increase immediately and address all policies that are detrimental to the well-being of Nigerians.
