Gunmen kill councillor, youth leader in Ebonyi community

Suspected gunmen have killed Stanley Akpa Nweze and Arinze Joshua Ugochukwu in Isu village, Onicha local government area of Ebonyi State. Nweze, a councilor representing Enuagu ward in the Onicha legislative council, and Ugochukwu, the coordinator of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) Onicha LGA chapter, were attacked on Monday while riding a bike in the Amanator area of Isu community.

Sources reported that the gunmen accosted Nweze and Ugochukwu, shooting them multiple times until they were confirmed dead. The attackers then fired shots into the air to scare away passersby before fleeing into a nearby forest.

Isu community has experienced a series of attacks and killings recently. The area shares a boundary with Enugu State and the Agba community in Ishielu local government area.

Chidiebere Uzor Agwu, Chairman of Onicha local government council, expressed shock over the killings. In a statement by his Media Adviser, Prince Chijioke Agwu, he described the incident as a “shattering tragedy” and urged security agencies to arrest and prosecute the perpetrators.

Douglas Ochishi, Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) Ebonyi state chapter, also condemned the killings. He vowed to seek justice and called on security agencies to take swift action in apprehending the culprits.
