The National Universities Commission (NUC) Acting Executive Secretary, Chris Maiyaki, has indicated that the Federal Government is diligently working to reconstitute the governing councils of the 61 federal universities soon. This move comes in response to the recent ultimatum by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and is part of the government’s efforts to enhance university education in the country. Maiyaki disclosed this during a meeting with journalists in Abuja, mentioning that a Local Organizing Committee (LOC) led by Education Minister Professor Tahir Mamman is working on the logistics for the council members’ inauguration. He emphasized the government’s commitment to selecting qualified individuals to serve on the councils, aimed at improving university administration. Maiyaki also addressed the criticism regarding the approval of new universities, stating that the demand for higher education in Nigeria exceeds the current capacity. Additionally, he outlined the NUC’s strategic priorities, including curriculum development, quality assurance, research, infrastructure, and internationalization, along with initiatives to promote blended learning and open and distance learning (ODL). The Commission has developed guidelines to regulate various aspects of university education, including transnational education, e-learning, and the establishment of private open universities, to ensure quality, equity, and access to higher education in Nigeria.
