An environmental consultant, Taiwo Adewole, on Wednesday urged Nigerians to plant more trees to reduce the country’s heat.
Mr Adewole made the call in an interview in Lagos.
The environmentalist said tree planting was important in generating more oxygen to regulate the climate.
He said trees, which encompass various species with economic value, play a pivotal role in sustainable development and environmental conservation.
“The more trees we plant, the more fresh air we get. Most people do not know that the oxygen we breathe is from trees. Trees play a crucial role in improving air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and other harmful pollutants while releasing oxygen. Tree is life, and it helps to reduce pollution,” he said.
He advised Nigerians to plant trees in their neighbourhoods or communities to keep life and fresh air in circulation.
According to him, trees greatly benefit the people living around them by positively impacting their mental health and wellbeing, reducing stress and encouraging outdoor exercise.
“This is in addition to the benefits they will receive from an improved environmental quality and improved amenity which comes with planted areas,” he said.
He also tasked the government to increase public awareness of the importance of tree planting.
