Bayern Munich’s title hunt continued with a hard-fought showdown away to Borussia Mönchengladbach.
An early red-card saw Bayern suffer their first defeat in five matches, producing another twist at the top of the table.
While Bayern dominated possession early on, Mönchengladbach responded well by threatening on the break with every chance they got.
They were rewarded for the efforts within 10 minutes when Alassane Pléa got in behind the Bayern defence, forcing Dayot Upamecano to pull him down from behind, seeing the Frenchman sent off, leaving his team outmanned for 80 minutes.
Bayern were immediately punished, as a superb free-kick routine saw Lars Stindl stab home from the edge of the box to give Mönchengladbach the lead.
The hosts continued to threaten on the break, and looked likely to extend their lead. But there was a sting in the tale, as Bayern responded before the break.
Against the run of play, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting collected the ball in the Gladbach box before slotting home to level the scoreline in the final 10 minutes of the opening half.
Gladbach picked up where they left off in the first half, causing the thin Bayern defence a host of problems.
They reclaimed their lead before the hour mark when Pleá found Jonas Hofmann all alone on the penalty spot for the attacker to tap home.
A late Marcus Thuram goal on the break drove the final nail into Bayern’s coffin, ensuring the visitors suffered a first defeat in five games.
Mathys Tel capitalised on a Gladbach mistake to cut the deficit in stoppage time, but it was a too-little, too-late for the league leaders.
As a result, Nagelsmann’s side could find themselves knocked off the summit of the Bundesliga by the end of the weekend.
