Court jails man one month for stealing phone at charging point

An Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court, on Thursday, sentenced a 22-year-old man, Dele Awolusi, to one month imprisonment for stealing a cell phone.

Chief Magistrate Titilayo Ola-Olorun, sentenced Mr Awolusi following his guilty plea and facts of the case.

Ms Ola-Olorun, however, gave the convict an option of N10,000 fine.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Johnson Okunade, had told the court that the convict committed the crime  on November 22 at about 10:00 a.m. at Orere Owu Area in Ado-Ekiti.

Mr Okunade said that the convict went to a place where people were  charging their phones, entered into the place and unplugged one of the phones, Infinix Smart, valued  N35,000 belonging to Ayodele Akinyemi.

He said it was the complainant that apprehended him, after he had stolen the phone and was taken to the police station.

According to him, the convict was a habitual criminal, who had stolen bags and phone twice, but got released at the police station after the stolen properties were recovered and given to the owner.

He added that the convict confessed to the crime while the phone was recovered from him.

Mr Okunade said the offence contravened Section 302 of the Criminal Laws of Ekiti State, 2021. (NAN)
