Salah, Mane ‘rivalry’ compared to Messi and Ronaldo

Against Watford on Saturday, Tony Cascarino believes Mohamed Salah has been helping Sadio Mane find the back of the net in more ways than one.

Mane, who scored the first of Liverpool’s five goals at Vicarage Road on Saturday, now has 100 in the Premier League.

Sadio Mane had Mo Salah to thank for his 100th Premier League goal

This came just weeks after his teammate, Salah, scored his 100th in the division.

And Cascarino believes the African duo’s friendly rivalry has helped spur each other on since they became teammates in 2017.

“They feel like they’re challenging each other all the time,” Cascarino told talkSPORT.

“They’re competing against each other and there’s a little bit of rivalry there where they both are driving each other.

“We talk about Ronaldo and Lionel Messi driving each other forward, I think these two have done it at the same club to each other.

“I think they both want to score outscore each other.

“But Mane’s goals – you think he’s got 100 in there without penalties. That’s pretty spectacular.”

Perhaps you can add Roberto Firmino to the pair’s mini goal contest, after the Brazilian’s hattrick in the 5-0 win.

Despite his treble and Mane’s strike, Jurgen Klopp insisted that Salah was best player in the world, ahead of the Ballon d’Or next month.

Klopp told BT Sport: “Top. Come on, we all see it, who’s better than him in this moment? That’s clear, there’s always this discussion and all these kinds of things.

“But we don’t have to talk about what [Cristiano] Ronaldo and [Lionel] Messi did for world football or how long they were really in the dominant.

“In the moment I think it’s clear there’s nobody better than him. How it is, it’s not only since yesterday, he’s been in that shape for a while.

“He’s young enough to keep the shape a little bit longer.”
