THE Federal Roads Safety Commission (FRSC) says it would commence the installation of speed limiting device in commercial vehicles in the country from June, 2015.
The Sector Commander of the commission in Plateau, Mr Sunday Maku, made this known on Friday in Jos at the commission’s “ember months” sensitisation campaign.
Maku said that the measure was among others being taken to minimise road traffic crashes across the country.
“We have resolved to limit the speed of commercial vehicles to protect the lives of passengers,’’ he stated.
He attributed frequent road accidents to speed limit violation by drivers, adding that checking the trend was “very crucial’’ to minimising recklessness among desperate commercial drivers.
Maku also decried the violation of traffic regulations by drivers “who consistently use phones, drive against traffic lanes, and overtake at bends and corners” and warned that offenders would be sanctioned.
He said that FRSC had initiated a partnership with stakeholders in the state, and called for cooperation from the public for safer roads for all.
In his remarks, Mr Jonah Emor, Chairman, Plateau chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, thanked FRSC for its sustained efforts to minimise road crashes in the country.
He assured that members of the union would abide by any speed limit approved by the commission.
Also speaking, Mr Quaseem Mohammed, the Head of Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) in the state, advised motorists to ensure that their vehicles had quality tyres at all times.
