Arsenal boosted their Premier League title ambitions on Saturday with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Everton at the Emirates Stadium, moving level on points with leaders Manchester City following the latter’s first league defeat of the season.
Defenders Ezri Konsa and Gabriel scored either side of half-time to secure three crucial points for Mikel Arteta’s side, who continued their impressive league campaign with a seventh victory in eight matches.
Arsenal took an early lead in the seventh minute when Konsa bundled the ball into the net at the far post following a corner, registering his first goal for the club.
The opener also ended Arsenal’s wait for their first non-penalty set-piece goal of the season.
Viktor Gyokeres, making his first Premier League start of the campaign, provided the assist for Konsa’s goal. It was his second assist in as many appearances after setting up Declan Rice’s equaliser in Wednesday’s 2-2 draw against Bayern Munich.
Arsenal maintained their attacking pressure, with Noni Madueke going close on several occasions, while Everton struggled to create clear-cut opportunities.
The visitors, however, had a golden opportunity to draw level shortly before half-time after Ben White’s weak headed back-pass presented Thierno Barry with a chance to score. The Everton forward failed to capitalise on the mistake, allowing Arsenal to retain their advantage.
Everton threatened again early in the second half when a cross from Rohl nearly found its way into the net, but Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya escaped without conceding.
Gabriel then doubled the hosts’ lead in the 68th minute, rising to head home a cross from White despite having suffered an injury scare earlier in the second half.
The Brazilian defender appeared to be in discomfort after an awkward fall on his right knee but recovered to continue and deliver a decisive contribution.
The goal effectively ended Everton’s hopes of salvaging a result as Arsenal controlled the closing stages to secure a clean sheet.
The victory was particularly important following Manchester City’s defeat to Aston Villa, which allowed Arsenal to move level with the champions on 21 points. The Gunners remained second on goal difference.
Arsenal have now won seven of their eight league matches, maintaining pressure on their title rivals despite a demanding schedule and injury concerns.
Speaking after the match, Arteta praised his players’ mentality, performance and resilience during a challenging week.
He said the team had overcome several obstacles, including injuries and a congested fixture schedule, while maintaining the quality required to win.
The Arsenal manager also singled out Gabriel as an example of the determination within the squad, praising the defender for recovering from his injury scare and scoring the second goal.
Arteta equally commended Konsa for adapting quickly to life at the club despite arriving without a pre-season and competing with established defenders for a place in the team.
He described the defender’s performances and developing partnership with Gabriel as impressive.
Meanwhile, Everton manager David Moyes admitted his team had not done enough to earn a positive result.
Moyes said conceding so early forced his side to chase the game, while their attacking performance lacked the quality needed to trouble Arsenal consistently.
Everton have now suffered consecutive league defeats after previously remaining unbeaten until last weekend. They are also still searching for their first away victory in the competition after four attempts.
The defeat extended Everton’s winless run in Premier League visits to Arsenal to 14 matches.
Arsenal will now look to maintain their momentum as the title race intensifies, while Everton must improve their attacking output and away form to get their campaign back on track.
