Barcelona maintained their perfect start to the 2026/27 La Liga season on Sunday, defeating Levante 4-2 away from home to record their fifth consecutive league victory.
The reigning Spanish giants dominated much of the encounter and appeared to be cruising to a comfortable win before two defensive errors allowed Levante to threaten a late comeback.
Barcelona made a fast start, taking the lead after just five minutes through Xavi Espart, who scored his first goal for the club following a well-worked passing move.
The visitors doubled their advantage 15 minutes later. Pau Cubarsí launched an excellent pass to Fermín López, who found Raphinha with a long ball. The Barcelona captain showed composure to round the goalkeeper before setting up Lamine Yamal for a simple finish.
Barcelona continued to control possession and dictate the tempo, while Levante struggled to make an impact. The home side had a couple of attacks ruled out for offside and became increasingly physical as they attempted to disrupt Barcelona’s rhythm.
The Catalans went into the interval with a deserved two-goal advantage.
Yamal struck again shortly after the restart, winning and converting a penalty to put Barcelona 3-0 ahead and seemingly settle the contest.
Levante responded with greater attacking intent, but Barcelona regained control and created several opportunities to extend their lead. With the game appearing comfortable, manager Hansi Flick made changes around the hour mark, including resting Yamal and Pedri.
However, Barcelona’s defensive lapses gave Levante renewed hope.
A poor pass from Espart inside his own penalty area allowed Iván Romero to pull one back for the hosts. Levante then reduced the deficit further when Marc Bernal lost possession in his own half, allowing Roger Brugué to beat goalkeeper Joan Garcia.
With Barcelona suddenly under pressure, substitute Karim Adeyemi produced the decisive moment in stoppage time. The forward embarked on a brilliant solo run down the left before firing home a spectacular goal to restore Barcelona’s two-goal cushion.
The final whistle confirmed a 4-2 victory for Barcelona, who moved to five wins from five league matches and maintained their three-point advantage at the top of the La Liga table.
Despite the late scare, Barcelona’s attacking form remains impressive, while Flick will expect his side to eliminate the defensive errors that made an otherwise dominant performance unnecessarily difficult.
