Barcelona maintained their perfect start to the La Liga season with a commanding 5-0 victory over Valencia at Mestalla on Sunday.
The defending Spanish giants produced another devastating attacking display, winning their fourth consecutive league match and opening a three-point lead at the top of the table.
Teenage sensation Lamine Yamal was at the heart of Barcelona’s performance, scoring twice, while Fermín López, Raphinha and Pedri were also on target.
Barcelona dominated from the opening whistle, repeatedly breaking down Valencia’s defensive block and creating a succession of clear-cut opportunities.
Yamal opened the scoring with a brilliant finish and appeared to have added a second before the goal was ruled out for a marginal offside decision. The youngster continued to cause problems for the Valencia defence and came close to completing his brace before half-time.
Fermín then doubled Barcelona’s advantage with a powerful finish inside the penalty area, although he was denied a second goal by Valencia goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski and the post.
Valencia managed to threaten occasionally, but Barcelona goalkeeper Joan Garcia made several important saves to preserve his side’s advantage.
Barcelona continued their dominance after the interval and quickly added a third. Fermín supplied the assist for Raphinha, who calmly finished from close range.
Pedri then made it 4-0 after combining brilliantly with Dani Olmo, before Yamal completed his brace with another composed finish inside the box.
Barcelona could have scored even more, with Dimitrievski making several saves while VAR decisions and some unlucky rebounds also denied the visitors further goals.
Manager Hansi Flick took advantage of Barcelona’s commanding lead to make several substitutions and rest key players. Gabriel Jesus also made his debut and looked lively, coming close to scoring.
The afternoon was not entirely positive for Barcelona, however, as Eric Garcia was forced off following a collision with Rodri and was later substituted under the concussion protocol.
Despite the setback, Barcelona’s performance underlined their early-season dominance. The Catalan club have now won all four of their league matches and sit three points clear at the summit.
With Yamal and the rest of Barcelona’s attacking unit in impressive form, Flick’s side have made a powerful statement at the start of their title campaign.
