Hull City produced a stunning start to their Premier League return on Saturday, defeating Manchester United 2-0 at the MKM Stadium, with Super Eagles defender Semi Ajayi among the goalscorers.

Ajayi struck in the 17th minute to give the newly promoted side a dream lead against a United team expected to challenge for the Premier League title this season.

The Nigerian defender reacted quickest after Oli McBurnie’s effort from a well-worked corner routine was saved by Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens, bundling the rebound into the net from close range.

Hull’s early breakthrough sent the home supporters into wild celebrations and put United under immediate pressure.

The Tigers then doubled their advantage before half-time through Senegalese defender Nobel Mendy, who headed home to leave Michael Carrick’s side facing a shock defeat.

Despite enjoying the majority of possession, Manchester United struggled to break down a disciplined Hull defence and were unable to find a response before the interval.

The result marked a remarkable start to Hull’s return to the English top flight after securing promotion through the Championship play-offs.

United, meanwhile, were left needing a major second-half turnaround to avoid beginning the new Premier League campaign with a damaging defeat.

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel praised Hull’s approach, saying the hosts had made life difficult for United by defending with five players and using their wing-backs effectively.

The defeat will come as a major disappointment to United, who had been expected to make a strong start in their bid to return to the Premier League title race.

For Ajayi and Hull City, however, it was a memorable afternoon as they stunned one of England’s biggest clubs and announced their return to the Premier League in emphatic fashion.
