Coventry City face a daunting return to the Premier League when they travel to the Emirates Stadium to take on reigning champions Arsenal in their opening game of the season on Friday.
The Sky Blues are back in England’s top flight for the first time in 25 years after winning the Championship last season. Manager Frank Lampard has strengthened his squad with several new arrivals as Coventry prepare for life among the Premier League elite.
Among the notable additions is Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi, who joined from Nottingham Forest for an initial £9 million. The forward could make his Coventry debut against Arsenal.
Awoniyi was given a farewell by his former Forest teammates during their pre-season victory over Brest on Sunday, with the players forming a guard of honour for the Nigerian.
Speaking after completing his move to Coventry, Awoniyi expressed his excitement about joining the club and working with his new teammates.
The striker is expected to compete with Ellis Simms for the starting role, while Brandon Thomas-Asante provides another attacking option. Haji Wright remains an injury doubt.
On the right wing, summer signing Loum Tchaouna is expected to start after impressing during pre-season. The French winger joined Coventry from Burnley for £20 million before the club later surpassed that fee with the £23 million signing of Caleb Yirenkyi from FC Nordsjælland.
Tchaouna scored in Coventry’s final pre-season game against Monaco and is likely to be handed the responsibility of testing Arsenal’s defence.
The biggest potential twist, however, could come on the left wing if Coventry manage to secure Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk on loan.
Mudryk joined Chelsea from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2023 but has been unable to play for an extended period after being suspended following a positive test for meldonium. The Football Association subsequently imposed a four-year ban, which Mudryk appealed.
The situation changed in July 2026 after the FA and World Anti-Doping Agency agreed to resolve the proceedings following an update to scientific reporting thresholds for meldonium. His suspension subsequently ended.
Reports have suggested that Mudryk is seeking a loan move and wants to remain in the Premier League. Coventry could appeal to the Ukrainian because of Lampard’s strong connections with Chelsea.
Lampard managed Mudryk during his brief spell as Chelsea’s caretaker manager in 2023, potentially giving Coventry an advantage if they pursue the 25-year-old.
If the move materialises, Coventry could line up against Arsenal with Tchaouna on the right, Awoniyi through the middle and Mudryk on the left.
Such an attack would give Lampard considerable pace and firepower, although Mudryk’s lengthy absence from competitive football would make the move a significant gamble.
For now, Coventry’s likely attacking options for the Arsenal clash are Tchaouna on the right, Awoniyi or Simms centrally, and Thomas-Asante or Ephron Mason-Clark on the left.
The Sky Blues will hope their new-look attack can make an immediate impact as they begin their long-awaited Premier League return at one of the toughest venues in English football.
