Iran’s military has announced a $30,000 reward for anyone who kills or captures and hands over a United States soldier, according to Iran’s state-run news agency, IRNA.

Iranian Army Commander-in-Chief, Major General Amir Hatami, announced the reward on Sunday, saying it followed requests from people seeking to provide financial support for the country’s military efforts.

“Anyone who kills or captures and hands over an invading American military personnel will receive a reward equivalent to $30,000 or 5 billion tomans from the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Army,” Hatami said.

He added that Iranian women who successfully carried out such an action would receive twice the stated reward.

Hatami did not specify where or when Iranian forces or civilians would be expected to capture or kill American military personnel.

The announcement comes amid heightened tensions between Tehran and Washington following months of military confrontation involving the United States, Israel and Iran.

The development also comes against the backdrop of continuing disagreements over military operations, the strategically important Strait of Hormuz and prospects for renewed diplomatic negotiations.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a major point of concern because it is a critical route for global oil shipments, with tensions around the waterway raising concerns about energy supplies and wider economic consequences.
