Two security operatives have been killed after gunmen ambushed a joint security patrol along the Ganawuri–Sabon Gida road in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Security sources told Vanguard that the attack occurred in the early hours of Tuesday after four operatives drawn from two security formations mounted a roadblock along the route.
The sources said the team had concluded the operation and was returning to their respective duty posts when two of the operatives failed to return, prompting an immediate search by their colleagues.
Their bodies were later discovered at the scene of the ambush, while their service rifles had been taken by the attackers. However, the motorcycle used by the slain operatives was recovered.
Following the attack, security personnel launched cordon-and-search operations across nearby communities to track down the assailants and recover the stolen weapons.
As of the time of filing this report, the identities of the deceased operatives had not been officially confirmed.
Efforts to obtain official confirmation from the spokesperson for the Plateau State Police Command, SP Alfred Alabo, and the Media Information Officer of Operation Enduring Peace, Captain Chinonso Polycarp Oteh, were unsuccessful.
