At least 17 members of the House of Representatives have defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), deepening the ongoing political shifts within the party.
The Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, formally announced the defections during Tuesday’s plenary session in the Green Chamber. According to the lawmakers, their decision was driven by “unresolved crises” within the ADC.
Those who joined the NDC include Yusuf Datti, Uchenna Okonkwo, Adamu Wakili, Thaddeus Attah, George Ozodinobi, Lilian Orogbu, Oluwaseyi Sowunmi, Peter Aniekwe, Mukhtar Zakari, George Oluwande, and Munachim Umezuruike.
Others are Emeka Idu, Jesse Onuakalusi, Ifeanyi Uzokwe, Afam Ogene, Murphy Omroruyi, and Abdulhakeem Ado.
The defections come amid broader political realignments linked to internal disagreements and structural tensions within the ADC, which stakeholders say have weakened party unity.
The development follows the recent move by key political figures, including Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, to align with the NDC. Their decision is widely seen as an effort to avoid internal conflicts and build a more stable platform ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement, Obi said his decision came after “deep reflection” on Nigeria’s situation, emphasising that it was not motivated by personal ambition but by a desire to contribute more effectively to national development. He also stressed the need for focused leadership and fewer internal distractions within political parties.
Kwankwaso, alongside Obi, urged supporters to prioritise national interest over internal disputes, calling for unity within the emerging political bloc.
