A protest against the planned coronation of a Nigerian traditional leader in East London turned violent on Monday, leaving several vehicles damaged and buildings set ablaze.
The demonstration, held in Kugompo City—formerly known as East London—was initially organised as a peaceful march by local groups and traditional leaders opposing the installation of Solomon Ogbonna Eziko as “Igwe Ndigbo Na East London.”
According to police, the situation escalated after some protesters broke away from the main gathering point at the city hall, where a petition was being submitted.
Police spokesperson Nobuntu Gantana confirmed that at least 12 vehicles were damaged, while several buildings were torched during the unrest. However, no injuries were reported.
The protest followed calls by ActionSA, which had earlier announced plans to march against the coronation. The group argued that the move was unacceptable to some local residents.
Speaking ahead of the protest, Athol Trollip, a leader of the group, criticised the planned installation, describing it as shocking and unacceptable to the community.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing, while security has been reinforced in the area to prevent further violence.
