Tragedy has struck in Kano following the death of a woman, Hafsat Yusuf, just hours after she delivered quintuplets at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital.
Hafsat Yusuf gave birth to five babies—three boys and two girls—on Wednesday afternoon through a Caesarean section at the hospital. However, her husband, Salisu Nafiu, confirmed that she passed away in the early hours of Thursday, at about 1 a.m.
“She delivered the babies successfully in the afternoon, but we lost her in the early hours of today,” Nafiu said, describing the incident as a deeply painful loss for the family.
Despite the mother’s death, all five newborns are alive and currently under close medical supervision. Nafiu noted that the babies are stable and receiving adequate care from health professionals at the facility.
The quintuplets’ birth marked Hafsat’s ninth delivery, as she had previously given birth to twins, making the situation both extraordinary and emotionally overwhelming for the family.
Medical personnel at the hospital have continued to monitor the infants closely to ensure their survival and proper development. A source within the hospital disclosed that the babies are receiving specialised care to support their health.
Earlier, the Kano State Ministry of Health announced that the state government would take full responsibility for the medical care of the newborns.
In a statement, the ministry assured that the government is committed to providing the children with the best possible healthcare services. It added that the intervention reflects broader efforts to strengthen maternal and child healthcare systems in the state and reduce mortality rates.
The incident has sparked an outpouring of sympathy from residents, many of whom described it as a heartbreaking blend of joy and sorrow for the bereaved family.
