A female passenger has died and six others were injured in a road accident along the Oworonsoki–Apapa Expressway in Lagos.
The accident occurred at New Castle Bus Stop inward Gbagada when a Volkswagen commercial bus reportedly lost control and crashed into a roadside culvert.
According to the spokesperson of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Adebayo Taofiq, the impact threw a female passenger out of the vehicle onto the expressway.
He said an oncoming articulated trailer could not avoid the sudden incident and ran over the victim, leading to her death.
LASTMA officials quickly responded to the crash, cordoning off the area to allow emergency operations and prevent further accidents.
Six passengers, including the bus driver, sustained serious injuries. Emergency responders from the Lagos State Ambulance Service transported the injured victims to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Security personnel from the Pedro Police Division also arrived at the scene to assist with traffic control and maintain order.
The remains of the deceased passenger were later evacuated by the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit, while traffic officials cleared the wreckage to restore normal vehicular movement on the busy expressway.
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery.
He also urged motorists and commercial transport operators to ensure proper maintenance of their vehicles, especially braking systems, to prevent avoidable road accidents.
