Arsenal FC moved a significant step closer to the Premier League title with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion FC on the south coast.

A first-half goal from Bukayo Saka proved decisive in a tense encounter that tested Arsenal’s resolve. Saka’s low effort was mishandled by Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen and deflected into the net, handing the visitors the lead after an early scare at the other end.

Brighton began brightly and nearly capitalised on a misplaced pass from David Raya, only for Gabriel to clear off the line. The hosts continued to press for an equaliser but found Arsenal’s defence in determined mood.

Gabriel delivered an outstanding performance at centre-back, repeatedly blocking and clearing danger, while Declan Rice dominated midfield with a tireless display.

Despite Brighton enjoying spells of possession and creating half-chances, Arsenal remained disciplined under pressure. Substitute Leandro Trossard had an opportunity to seal the match late on but failed to convert, setting up a nervy finish as Brighton pushed forward during seven minutes of stoppage time.

Arsenal held firm to secure their fifth win in seven league matches. The result, combined with Manchester City FC dropping points elsewhere, leaves Mikel Arteta’s side seven points clear at the top.

It was not a polished performance, but it underlined Arsenal’s resilience as they continue their pursuit of a first league title in 22 years.
