Gunmen attack Peter Obi at ADC event in Benin

A political event turned violent in Benin City on Tuesday after armed hoodlums reportedly stormed the venue of a programme organised by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and opened fire.

Witnesses said the attackers disrupted the gathering and specifically pursued the vehicle conveying former presidential candidate, Peter Obi. The assailants allegedly chased the convoy toward the residence of Chief John Onyegu, where gunshots were said to have continued.

The incident, which occurred just minutes before reports emerged, threw the area into confusion as attendees and residents scrambled for safety.

As of the time of filing this report, details remain unclear regarding casualties or injuries. Efforts are ongoing to confirm the condition of Mr. Obi, as conflicting accounts continue to circulate about whether he survived the attack.

Security agencies are yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
