The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has described the ongoing 350-megawatt Abuja Gas Independent Power Project (IPP) being developed by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) as critical to achieving Nigeria’s national grid target of 8,500 megawatts by the end of 2026.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NISO, Engr. Abdu Mohammed Bello, stated this during an on-site inspection of the project on Wednesday. He led a high-level management team to assess the level of progress and identify areas requiring stronger collaboration to ensure timely completion and commissioning.

Bello noted that the project represents a major boost to power generation capacity and aligns with ongoing efforts to stabilise and expand electricity supply across the country.

During the visit, the NISO delegation also inspected the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) implementation site at the Gwagwalada transmission substation.

The team expressed optimism that by the end of 2026, Nigeria’s electricity value chain—from generation to transmission and distribution—would be fully integrated into a unified SCADA system. This integration, they said, would enhance real-time grid visibility, improve monitoring, and strengthen overall system reliability and stability.
