Police inspector shoots two colleagues in Port Harcourt, kills one

An Inspector of Police, Victor Okus, has shot two of his colleagues in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, resulting in the death of one officer.

The incident involved officers attached to the 17 Police Mobile Force (PMF), who were reportedly on special duty. It occurred on Sunday, January 18, 2026, at Next Cash and Carry Supermart in the Trans-Amadi area of Port Harcourt.

Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed that Inspector Okus was immediately arrested and is currently in custody.

One of the victims, Inspector Ibrahim Sani, died from injuries sustained in the shooting, while the second officer, Inspector Daniel Dauda, is receiving medical treatment at Nopsam Hospital. The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Military Hospital Mortuary in Port Harcourt for autopsy.

Preliminary reports from the Unit Commander, DSP Turaki Hassan, indicated that the suspect allegedly shot the officers in the head and neck during the incident. The injured officers were rushed to the hospital for urgent medical attention.

The Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Olugbenga Adepoju, has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident. He said Inspector Okus will undergo an Orderly Room Trial and will subsequently be charged to court.

The commissioner also urged officers to adhere strictly to firearm safety rules and maintain professionalism while on duty. He extended condolences to the family of the deceased officer.
