Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has strongly criticised reports of luxury vehicles being distributed for 2027 campaign mobilisation, describing the move as a shocking abuse of public trust at a time of widespread hardship.
In a statement titled “Distribution of Campaign Vehicles: Profound Insensitivity and Abuse of Trust,” Obi faulted the use of scarce public resources for purchasing Hilux trucks, Hummer buses and other luxury vehicles while millions of Nigerians struggle with hunger, insecurity, and unemployment.
He said leaders continue to flaunt wealth and ride expensive Land Cruisers and Hummer buses “while ordinary Nigerians grapple with poverty and hopelessness,” calling the trend a tragic misplacement of priorities.
“Leadership, especially in these challenging times, should focus on providing food for the hungry, ensuring access to healthcare for the sick, restoring hope for unemployed youth, and securing our communities. It should not be about parading luxury vehicles or campaigning for votes,” Obi stated.
He lamented that children are dropping out of school over unpaid fees, mothers are dying in childbirth due to lack of basic medical supplies, and insecurity is tearing families apart, yet authorities appear more focused on political display than addressing urgent needs.
“This is not governance. It reflects a profound insensitivity and an abuse of public trust disguised as a political strategy,” Obi warned, insisting that public service must be about serving the people, not stage-managed publicity.
He urged leaders to prioritise compassion, prudence, and accountability in managing national resources, saying Nigeria cannot continue on a path of wastefulness and misplaced priorities.
“Regardless of how bleak the situation may appear today, I firmly believe that a New Nigeria is not only necessary; it is possible,” he concluded.
