A Kaduna-based lawyer, Barrister Steve Adamu, has landed in court after EFCC investigations found that his petition accusing his landlord of unexplained wealth was false and malicious. The petition, submitted to the EFCC’s Kaduna Zonal Directorate, alleged that the landlord had no visible means of livelihood despite acquiring luxury vehicles and developing multiple properties—claims the Commission later discovered were untrue.

Barrister Steve Adamu was on Monday arraigned before Justice Darius Khobo of the Kaduna State High Court on a one-count charge of giving false information. According to the charge, the defendant allegedly provided information he knew to be untrue, which the EFCC relied on to initiate an investigation, thereby committing an offence contrary to Section 16(1) of the EFCC (Establishment) Act, 2004, and punishable under Section 16(2) of the same Act.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge. Following his plea, prosecution counsel M.E. Eimonye requested a trial date, while the defence asked the court to grant bail.

Justice Khobo ordered the remand of the defendant at the Nigerian Correctional Centre and adjourned the case until December 20, 2025, for hearing of the bail application.
