Kylian Mbappé scored the decisive goal as Real Madrid defeated nine-man Getafe 1–0 to reclaim the top spot in La Liga on Sunday.
The match began with players from both sides standing still for 15 seconds to protest La Liga’s decision to stage a match between Villarreal and Barcelona in Miami later this year.
After a goalless first half, Getafe’s substitute Allan Nyom was sent off just 44 seconds after coming on for elbowing Vinicius Jr. Real quickly capitalized on the advantage, with Mbappé slotting home Arda Güler’s through ball in the 80th minute.
Getafe’s troubles deepened when Alex Sancris received a second yellow card in the 84th minute. Despite being reduced to nine men, they nearly equalized in stoppage time, but goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois made a crucial save to deny Abu Kamara.
The win puts Real Madrid back above Barcelona, who had beaten Girona 2–1 the previous day. Mbappé’s strike was his 10th league goal of the season, keeping him atop the scoring charts.
Real will next face Juventus in the Champions League on Wednesday, while Getafe continue their domestic campaign looking to rebound from the loss.
