A petrol tanker loaded with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) overturned and burst into flames along the Abeokuta–Sagamu expressway in the early hours of Friday, destroying three vehicles and damaging community infrastructure.
The accident occurred around 1 a.m. near the Abeokuta–Kobape–Siun–Sagamu interchange. A truck, a towing van, and another vehicle parked by the roadside were burnt, while a solar-powered streetlight and an electricity cable supplying Mowe town and its environs were also destroyed.
Emergency teams, including the Ogun State Fire Service, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), police, NSCDC, TRACE, Amotekun, and Nestlé Fire Service, were deployed to contain the fire, rescue victims, and divert traffic.
TRACE spokesperson Babatunde Akinbiyi confirmed the incident, attributing it to excessive speeding and loss of control. He said casualty figures were not yet known as operations were still ongoing.
