A financial scandal has rocked the University of Calabar (UNICAL) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) over the alleged diversion of N138 million in unremitted check-off dues.
The alleged fraud, said to have occurred under the past leadership led by John Edor in 2019, prompted ASUU’s national body to suspend the UNICAL chapter.
Some concerned lecturers, led by John Inaku, have taken the matter to the National Industrial Court in Calabar, demanding accountability and refunds. They are seeking a court order compelling Edor to render an account of dues collected during his tenure and refund the unremitted N138 million.
The claimants are also asking the court to lift the suspension of the UNICAL chapter, award damages totaling over N200 million, and direct ASUU’s national leadership to discipline those found culpable.
Responding, Edor said the union has internal mechanisms for resolving such disputes and urged aggrieved members to use those channels.
