Tœhe Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the tragic death of a 32-year-old man, Saint Sunny Amadi, following a fire incident allegedly triggered by his pregnant girlfriend, a university undergraduate, in Choba, Port Harcourt.

The incident occurred at No. 11B Okoro Street, Choba, where Amadi was reportedly set ablaze in a room by his lover, identified as Cynthia Chukwundah, a 300-level student of the University of Port Harcourt. Both were severely injured in the blaze and rushed to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH).

While Amadi later succumbed to his injuries and died, Cynthia is currently undergoing medical treatment. According to police sources, she is heavily pregnant with the deceased’s child.

The Rivers State Police Command, in a statement released by its Public Relations Officer, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, said detectives from Choba Division responded swiftly to the incident upon receiving a distress call at about 11:12 a.m. They visited both the scene and the hospital where the victim was being treated.

“Although Cynthia is receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the fire, she is not in a stable enough condition to offer a detailed explanation. Due to her pregnancy and medical condition, police interrogation has been suspended until she is well enough to speak,” the statement read.

The exact cause of the fire has not been determined, but the police have launched a thorough investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga A. Adepoju, has appealed for calm, assuring the public that justice will prevail.
