Former CJN Mohammed Uwais Dies at 89

Justice Mohammed Uwais, former Chief Justice of Nigeria, has died at the age of 89. His death was confirmed on Friday morning by the Ondo State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Kayode Ajulo.

Justice Uwais served as CJN from 1995 until his retirement in 2006. He was widely respected for championing judicial reform and upholding the integrity of Nigeria’s legal system.

Following his retirement, he was appointed by the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua to lead the Presidential Electoral Reform Committee. The committee included notable figures such as Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah and human rights lawyer Dr. Olisa Agbakoba, SAN.

Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced. Tributes from across the legal, political, and civil society spectrum are expected in the coming days.
