A disturbing incident involving public humiliation and physical assault has drawn widespread condemnation after a video surfaced online showing Chief Arinola Abraham Love (JP) being mistreated by Ọba Semiu Olawale Ogunjobi, the Oloorile of Orile Ifo. The video, which has sparked outrage, shows the elderly chief kneeling on the road, being slapped and verbally abused by the Oba.
The incident reportedly stemmed from a dispute over kingship supremacy. According to reports, Ọba Ogunjobi was angered by Chief Love’s perceived support for a rival coronet Oba, named Wasiu. In response, the Oba allegedly confronted Chief Love in his area, subjecting him to the degrading treatment captured in the video.
The incident has provoked strong backlash, with many questioning the conduct of a traditional ruler. SF. Ojo Emmanuel, a concerned citizen, condemned the actions on social media, calling it “highly condemnable and completely unjustifiable.” Emmanuel emphasized that such actions are not only disrespectful but also unlawful, pointing out that there are more dignified ways for traditional leaders to resolve disputes.
The video has raised broader concerns about the treatment of elders and the abuse of power by traditional rulers. Critics argue that the public humiliation of Chief Love is a violation of the respect traditionally afforded to senior members of society and has no place in modern governance.
The Oba’s actions have yet to be officially addressed, but calls for accountability and the promotion of peaceful conflict resolution continue to grow. The situation highlights the need for greater respect and dignity for all individuals, especially elders, within traditional leadership structures.
