The President General of National Union of Local Government Employee, NULGE, Comrade Akeem Olatunji Ambali has called for the revitalisation of the nation’s Councils if they really want to be totally free from the shackle of state governments.
He said the local government stakeholders must be ready to work in unity to transform the Councils .
He spoke yesterday in Abuja at a two day meeting of the Forum of Heads of Local Government Administration in Nigeria FOHOLGON.
Ambali who was represented by Eng. Kayode Adebayo said the autonomy given to Local government is challenging that must not be trampled upon by maladministration.
According to him, the autonomy will bring about good governance and bridge the infrastructural gap and stop rural to urban migration if properly utilized.
FOHOLGON President, Abdul Rahman Mafara in his welcome address urged local government administrators to take the advantage of the networking opportunities available to redress the stagnation they are experiencing under their dependency on the state governments.
He said as the engine room of local government administration, the heads of administration in each of the council has a major role to play by “exploring new avenues of collaboration, sharpen our skills to make informed and inclusive decisions to drive innovation for efficient service delivery in the 774 local Councils in the country.”
He said there was need therefore to build partnership and collaborate with one another to leverage resources and expertise.
“As heads of administration at the level of local government, our role in achieving the goals of the autonomy is very important. We are the technocrats that will implement the policies for the actualisation of the set goals ”
