President Bola Tinubu has pledged that his administration will prioritize the welfare of teachers. This commitment was made during the 2024 World Teachers’ Day celebration, themed “Valuing Teacher Voices: Towards a New Social Contract for Education,” held in Abuja on Saturday.
Tinubu acknowledged the dedication and collaborative efforts of friendly nations and international development partners in recognizing and supporting teachers globally, including those in Nigeria.
He assured that his government would take every measure to enhance teachers’ welfare and ensure quality education—crucial for women’s empowerment, disease prevention, poverty reduction, and promoting peace and prosperity in Nigeria.
Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume, Tinubu emphasized the importance of specialized teacher education, stating that it equips educators with the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes to perform effectively in the school system.
Minister of State for Education, Dr. Yusuf Sununu, reiterated the ministry’s commitment to empowering teachers and enhancing their professional development. He stated that the government would continue to prioritize policies that uplift the teaching profession and place teachers at the center of educational reforms.
Sununu remarked, “We are dedicated to improving teacher training, professional development, and working conditions nationwide. Additionally, we are expanding access to new technologies and resources to ensure that Nigerian teachers can provide world-class education, even in remote areas.”
He called on state governments, private sector partners, civil society, and international development partners to collaborate in this mission, aiming to create an education system where teachers are appreciated and empowered to shape policies and drive positive change.
Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, Nasir Sani Gwarzo, advocated for incorporating teachers’ perspectives into educational policy and decision-making processes.
As part of the celebrations, outstanding teachers received awards, including car gifts.
