The Federal Government has announced plans to restructure the 115 Federal Unity Colleges (FUCs) across the country into separate basic and secondary schools.

Dr. Yusuf Sununu, Minister of State for Education, revealed this during the Annual General Meeting of Principals of Unity Colleges in Abuja on Tuesday. The meeting, themed “Entrepreneurship Education: A Panacea for Self-Reliance and National Development,” highlighted the importance of this initiative.

Sununu explained that this restructuring aligns with the National Policy on Education (NPE) and aims to enhance infrastructure, improve teachers’ welfare, and create job opportunities. He emphasized the need to cultivate an entrepreneurial spirit in students to foster self-reliance and contribute to national development.

“Unemployment is a significant issue, and we must equip students with the skills and mindset to overcome it. Entrepreneurship education can address this by encouraging creativity, innovation, and calculated risk-taking,” Sununu said.

He urged Principals to collaborate as key stakeholders to advance the educational quality of the schools. Dr. Idowu Akinbamijo, Chairperson of the Principals of Federal Unity Colleges, noted that the meeting aimed to set the agenda for the upcoming year and build capacity for future challenges.
