Former Nigerian President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, on Friday said purposeful leadership and teamwork are crucial for driving positive change and development in Nigeria.

This was as he warned that Nigeria is sitting on keg of gunpowder and that progress in the country is contingent on reforms in governance practices.

Obasanjo made these remarks while hosting six members of the House of Representatives, who co-sponsored bills advocating for a single six-year term for the president and governors, power rotation between the northern and southern regions of the country, and a unified election day for presidential, governorship, national, and state assembly elections. The delegation was led by Hon. Ugochinyere Ikenga, representing the Ideato North and South Federal Constituency of Imo State, at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta.

Addressing the concerns raised by the #EndBadGovernance protesters, Obasanjo affirmed that their demands were legitimate and urged the government to listen to the people rather than misleading them into believing that all is well.

He warned: “As I have previously stated, we must recognize that we are all sitting on a keg of gunpowder if we do not start addressing these issues… For example, the youth’s demands are very legitimate and deserve to be heard—why should they be denied what is rightfully theirs? They are frustrated, hungry, angry, and unemployed. They deserve to be given a fair hearing.”
