Sergio Ramos could soon be reunited with either Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo after leaving Sevilla as a free agent.
The 38-year-old rejoined his boyhood club in LaLiga last September after leaving PSG as a free agent.
But with Sevilla having performed poorly overall last season – the club finished 14th in the table – Ramos has decided to move on to new challenges.
A statement on the club website confirmed his departure this summer and read: “Sergio Ramos has informed Sevilla FC that he will not continue next season at the Nervión club after fulfilling his dream of returning to the club where he was formed as a player and reached the senior international level.
“Sergio Ramos has played 37 games in the 23/24 season, with a total of 3,301 minutes and seven goals to his credit.
“Sevilla FC would like to thank Sergio Ramos for his commitment, leadership and the utmost dedication he has shown this season, wishing him the best of luck in his next professional challenge.”
While Ramos’ next destination has not yet been confirmed, there are a few exciting and familiar potential names on the shortlist.
According to Spanish media outlet Relevo, Ramos’ agent travelled to the USA before Easter to visit various clubs in the MLS, where his former PSG teammate Messi is currently playing for Inter Miami.
The Athletic reported in May that MLS expansion side San Diego FC, due to enter the franchise in 2025, were in advanced talks with Ramos.
But with a deal not yet confirmed, it remains to be seen if the Spaniard will sign a deal with San Diego, another MLS side, or a club in another league entirely.
For Messi is not the only ex-teammate whose club could soon potentially be welcoming Ramos.
It has also been reported that Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr have been in touch with Ramos’ camp to express their interest in signing the defender as early as January 2023.
The pair played together at Real Madrid, winning two La Liga titles and four Champions League titles together among other accolades.
With Al-Nassr having finished runners-up in the 2023/24 season of the Saudi Pro League, the club could provide an attractive prospect for the World Cup and double-Euro champion.
