After one year and four months at the saddle Senator Abdullahi Adamu has finally thrown in the towel as the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He becomes the first National Chairman of the party to resign from office.
The National Secretary of the party, Senator Iyiola Omisore, also tendered his resignation letter.
Acting National Chairman of the party, Senator Abubakar Kyari, confirmed the development on Tuesday after a crucial meeting of the NWC.
The development put to rest the widely reported resignation of the Chairman and the Secretary at the weekend.
Addressing newsmen after the NWC meeting, the acting chairman, who was Deputy National Chairman (North), Senator Kyari announced the resignation of the two party leaders.
According to Kyari: “The NWC wishes to inform you (the press), of the resignation of the National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu and that of the National Secretary, Senator Iyiola Omisore.
“With this development, and according to the constitution of the All Progressives Congress (APC), it is now incumbent on my humble self, Senator Abubakar Kyari as the Deputy National Chairman (North) to assume the office of the Acting National Chairman of All Progressives Congress, (APC) And subsequently
“Also, the Deputy National Secretary, Barrister Festus Fuanter will now assume the office of the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC).”
On the National Caucus and NEC meetings, the Acting Chairman said: “With this recent development in the change of leadership, I like to inform everybody here that the proposed national caucus meeting slated for Tuesday 18th July 2023 and the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the All Progressives Congress, APC slated for Wednesday 19th July 2023 has hereby been postponed. And this postponement will not be indefinite but a new date will be communicated shortly.”
Asked about the reasons for the resignation of the two leaders, the acting chairman promised to make it public in due course.
Omisore was earlier excused from the NWC meeting when he arrived at the party secretariat around 11:20 am.
A member of the NWC at the meeting, who spoke in confidence, said: “Following the letter of resignation Omisore the committee felt he should not join our meeting and we advised him accordingly and he left.”
The Secretary, after staying less than an hour left the office without joining his colleagues at the NWC meeting.
Accosted by newsmen when he was about to leave for an update on the leadership crisis, the former Osun Deputy Governor simply said: “I am going to check on the National Chairman. I don’t know why he is not in the office today.”
When asked if he will be returning to join others in the meeting, Omisore said: “Yes, I am coming back. I just going to see the chairman” before heading straight for his car.
The NWC meeting chaired by Kyari attracted Deputy National Chairman (South) Emma Enukwu; National Vice Chairman (North West) Salihu Lukman; National Vice Chairman (North East) Salihu Mustapha; National Vice Chairman (North Central) Muazu Bawa; National Vice Chairman(South West) Issacs Kekemeke; National Vice Chairman (South East) Ijeomah Arodiogbu, National Vice Chairman (South-South) Victor Giadom and the Deputy National Secretary, Barrister Festus Fuanter.
