Former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has formally joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), in a move seen as a boost to opposition politics in Kano and beyond.

He was received on Monday by the party’s National Chairman, David Mark, alongside his supporters.

Mark described Kwankwaso’s defection as a response to growing calls for a stronger and more united opposition, noting that the ADC aims to provide Nigerians with credible alternatives and promote democratic values.

He warned against actions that could shrink opposition space, stressing that democracy thrives on participation and the freedom of citizens to choose their leaders.

Mark added that Kwankwaso brings significant grassroots support, especially in Northern Nigeria, through the Kwankwasiyya movement.

He called on Nigerians, political parties, civil society groups, and youths to join the emerging coalition to strengthen democracy and build a more inclusive political system.

In his remarks, Kwankwaso urged supporters to register with the party and mobilise others ahead of future elections.

A supporter, Mubarak Fagge, said efforts were already underway to expand the party’s base through grassroots mobilisation.
