Lionel Messi has moved ahead of Pelé on the all-time free-kick scorers’ chart, reaching 71 goals to claim second place in football history.

The Inter Miami CF and Argentina star now trails only Juninho Pernambucano, who holds the record with 77 goals from direct free-kicks.

Messi’s latest milestone further highlights his evolution into one of the game’s most lethal set-piece specialists. Once known primarily for his dribbling, playmaking, and open-play finishing, the Argentine has transformed free-kicks into a consistent and decisive weapon over the years.

His tally places him clear of Pelé’s 70, while legends like Ronaldinho and Víctor Legrotaglie remain further behind on 66.

The achievement underscores Messi’s longevity and continued excellence well into his 30s, as he keeps adding new records to an already historic career.

With just six goals separating him from Juninho’s long-standing record, attention now turns to whether Messi can complete the chase and become the greatest free-kick scorer of all time.
