President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has praised the resilience and creativity of Nigerians, highlighting their ability to transform historical experiences into a vibrant modern identity.

Tinubu made the remarks on Thursday at a reception held at Tate Modern, London, organised by the British Government as part of activities marking his state visit to
the United Kingdom.

The event, which celebrated Nigeria’s modern art movement under the theme Nigeria’s Modernism, drew attention to the country’s rich cultural heritage and the global impact of its creative industry.

Describing the exhibition as more than an artistic display, the President said it symbolises a cultural revolution driven by a generation of Nigerians who refused to be defined by external perceptions.

“It is a testament to revolution. It tells the story of a generation of Nigerian giants who, in the mid-20th century, refused to be defined by others but chose to define themselves,” Tinubu said.

He commended Nigerian artists for blending traditional heritage with contemporary expression, noting that their works have achieved global relevance and enduring value.

The President also used the platform to project optimism about Nigeria’s economic trajectory, stating that the country has moved beyond a period of uncertainty and is now on a path to sustained growth and renewed hope.

He cautioned against undue focus on negative economic indicators, expressing confidence in the capacity of Nigerians to succeed both at home and abroad.

In his remarks, the United Kingdom’s Deputy Prime Minister, David Lammy, welcomed Tinubu and the First Lady, reaffirming the strong bilateral relationship between both countries.

Lammy revealed that annual trade between Nigeria and the UK has reached £8.1 billion, while over 500,000 Nigerians continue to contribute significantly to the UK’s cultural and economic life. He also underscored Nigeria’s growing global cultural influence and reiterated the UK’s commitment to strengthening trade and investment ties.

Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, who moderated the event, highlighted the achievements of Nigerians excelling in key sectors across the United Kingdom.

The event was attended by several top Nigerian officials, including Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, and Minister of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy Hannatu Musawa.

Also present were Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi, Minister of Defence Christopher Musa (rtd), Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Minister of Finance Wale Edun, Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment Jumoke Oduwole, Minister of Education Tunji Alausa, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Bianca Ojukwu, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, and NIA Director-General Mohammed Mohammed.
