Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have arrested a former councillor in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area, Sheleru Olalekan, for alleged involvement in drug trafficking.

The 45-year-old suspect, who previously represented the Orimedu community, was arrested on March 2 at his residence in Ilado, Ibeju-Lekki.

According to NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, officers recovered 40 kilograms of skunk, a strain of cannabis, during a search of the suspect’s home. Olalekan reportedly admitted ownership of the drugs and the property where they were found.

In a separate operation in the Federal Capital Territory, NDLEA operatives intercepted a businessman, Emeka Hyginus Okwor, who was travelling from Obollo-Afor in Enugu State to Zuba, Abuja.

A search of his luggage revealed 1,000 pills of tapentadol concealed inside baby diapers. The suspect reportedly confessed that he was transporting the drugs to Gurara in Niger State.

In Kogi State, NDLEA officers also intercepted a Cameroonian traveller, Mey Ali Muhamat, with 1.55 kilograms of synthetic cannabis concealed inside a standing fan carton while travelling from Lagos to Cameroon.

The agency recorded additional seizures and arrests in several states, including Adamawa State, Kano State, Ogun State, Delta State and Edo State, where large quantities of tramadol, codeine-based syrup and cannabis were recovered.

Chairman of the NDLEA, Mohamed Buba Marwa, commended officers across the agency’s commands for the arrests and seizures and urged them to sustain the fight against drug trafficking nationwide.
