Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statewide broadcast on Friday, Fintiri announced that he joined the APC alongside members of his cabinet and key PDP officials in the state. He said the decision was taken in the developmental interest of Adamawa, noting that alignment with the party at the centre would open up greater opportunities for federal collaboration and accelerated growth.

Fintiri, who was first elected governor in 2019 on the platform of the PDP and re-elected in 2023, has been one of the prominent PDP governors in the North-East. His administration has consistently highlighted infrastructure development, education reforms and agricultural expansion as key policy priorities.

In recent months, the governor had publicly commended some policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, particularly reforms aimed at increasing state revenues and strengthening fiscal federalism—remarks that fuelled speculation about a possible political realignment.

His defection marks a significant political shift in Adamawa State, traditionally a competitive battleground between the PDP and the APC, and is expected to alter the balance of power ahead of future political contests in the state.
